Thornlands Clinical Counselling

About Me.
Background:

I have worked in multiple clinical nurse and clinical research roles in various countries. My nursing background allows me to have a deep understanding of how physical illness and mental health have an interdependent relationship and how this not only impacts an individual, but the family dynamic too. I have gained experience working in a Community Health setting supporting women and children experiencing family violence. This gave me the wonderful opportunity to work with clients from broad socio-economic and multicultural backgrounds, including refugees and asylum seekers. Treatment focus for these clients included safety, security (homelessness), risk assessment, anxiety, depression, trauma, self-identity, self-esteem, coping skills and psychoeducation.
My counselling style is person-centred and solution focused. I have an interest in attachment theory and family systems theory. During each session it is important that you feel empowered and supported in finding practical solutions to real life challenges. At times clients just want a place to feel heard and process current concerns and challenges - I like to offer a non-judgmental, warm connected place to do this.
I am married and have teenage children. I love my family, socialising, the outdoors, exercise, and dogs! I am passionate about being a counsellor and love what I do. I would love to be able to offer animal therapy one day with my beautiful spoodle, Milo and Indi, a big, beautiful Labrador who loves his food!
Originally, I am from South Africa and I have lived in a few countries in my lifetime however I have now found my forever home to be in Queensland!
